This was accomplished by keeping the structure of the home simple and minimal. It is the wooden ceiling and the concrete floor that act as two simple planes that define the residence with the glass walls creating flexible boundaries between the interior and the garden outside. The interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces is seamless and one feels as if surrounded by the lovely garden while sitting in the living area or the family room.
A cool and ingenious ‘glass joint’ connects the old timber structure with the new extension and both buildings seem to retain their individual style and aura even while interacting with one another in a seamless manner.
The idea behind the extension was to enlarge the living space and alter the existing floor plan of the house and to move the dining area and family room into the new structure. Concrete and glass were the materials used to shape this seemingly minimal and polished new addition with the sliding glass doors and large floor-to-ceiling windows inviting the landscape indoors.
Villa Rijpwetering is all about relaxed Dutch living at its elegant best with the lavish house opening up towards the water views outside thanks to the large glass façade. An expansive wooden deck and series of terraces connect the home with the boat docks and the dwelling seems to gently float above the water when viewed from a distance.
Much of the original silhouette of the house was retained and given a modern upgrade with the reflecting pond a fabulous bridge and the brise soleil creating a stunning entrance. This image of tranquility is further enhanced as artificial lighting takes over after sunset with the illumination fashioning an atmosphere of inviting warmth.
An open living space leads to the more private bedrooms and a wonderful home office / study that adds color and contrast to the overall picture. Unassuming efficient and eco-sensitive this Chilean home is truly one-of-a-kind!
The distribution of the apartments across the four levels was done by placing one on the first floor while two duplex apartments occupy the second and third floors. A fourth apartment is accommodated on the top level with each individual apartment having its own outdoor lounge and porch that extends the living area outside.
