The distribution of the apartments across the four levels was done by placing one on the first floor while two duplex apartments occupy the second and third floors. A fourth apartment is accommodated on the top level with each individual apartment having its own outdoor lounge and porch that extends the living area outside.
This was accomplished by keeping the structure of the home simple and minimal. It is the wooden ceiling and the concrete floor that act as two simple planes that define the residence with the glass walls creating flexible boundaries between the interior and the garden outside. The interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces is seamless and one feels as if surrounded by the lovely garden while sitting in the living area or the family room.
The house moves away from the usual form of stylish contemporary residences and uses a series of large wooden decks terraces bridges and walkways to create an interior that is as much outdoorsy as it is sheltered and cozy! One feels both connected with the elements and protected from them at the same time with the beautiful indoor-outdoor interplay of the structure crafted from wood metal and glass. It is the lower level that contains the living area dining space and kitchen along with a single bedroom and storage area. It is the open top level that holds the master bedroom along with additional bedrooms and bathrooms.
The idea behind the extension was to enlarge the living space and alter the existing floor plan of the house and to move the dining area and family room into the new structure. Concrete and glass were the materials used to shape this seemingly minimal and polished new addition with the sliding glass doors and large floor-to-ceiling windows inviting the landscape indoors.
Bringing refined contemporary aesthetics and relaxed modern living to a predominantly rural landscape in Ukraine is all about enjoying the outdoors in a sheltered fashion. Nestled on one of the five Kharkiv hills the dashing contemporary residence is covered in a series of wooden slats and blinds that filter in natural sunlight even while offering complete privacy.
Glazed corner windows influence both the visual appeal of the exterior and the functionality indoors by allowing the homeowners to easily utilize even the tiniest of corner nooks while dark cedar ushers in textural contrast.
A succession of glass walls and windows towards the west completely opens the home towards the garden and the curated landscape. It is the roof structure that also offers shade for the outdoor dining living and kitchen spaces as the interior seems like an extension of the greenery outside.
